About Commissioner Reading
Born and raised in Houston County, Commissioner James H. Reading graduated from George Washington Carver High School as the class Valedictorian. He later graduated from George C. Wallace Community College and then attended Troy University as a History major.
Commissioner Reading is a veteran of the United States Air Force where he served for 21 years. He is also a retiree of the United States Postal Service where he can fondly recall that he worked for 20 years, 1 month, 2 days, and 3 hours!
His political affiliations include being a member of the Democratic National Committee, the Alabama Democratic Conference (good standing), the NAACP (paid-up lifetime member), and the NAACP Local Chapter 2025.
Because he believes that community involvement builds character and promotes future growth, Commissioner Reading is a very active participant with several local groups. He is a member of the Professional Golf Association, the PGA Dothan National, the Cultural Arts Center, Landmark Park, the Downtown Group, Wiregrass Rose Society (361 bushes), and the Dothan Prayer Breakfast Group. He is also a Master Mason in the Inland Empire Lodge #33 and a Gold Sponsor of the Hawk-Houston Boys & Girls Club. Furthermore, Commissioner Reading is a member of Greater Beulah Missionary Baptist Church where he serves on the Board of Trustees.
Commissioner Reading is married to Vivian Reading, a retiree of Bruno’s/Southern Foods Market. She is currently a homemaker who loves to shop! Mrs. Reading attends Northview Christian Church and is a member of Wednesday’s Bible Study Group. They are the proud parents of two sons, Barry and Rodney. Barry Hamilton Reading, a graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, is employed with Delta Airlines as a Global Operational Planning Specialist. He enjoys playing Competitive Amateur Golf. Their younger son, Rodney Vaughn Reading, is a graduate of George C. Wallace Community College where he received a technical degree in Electricity and another technical degree in Welding/Steel Fabrication and Blue Print Reading. He is currently employed at Qualico Steel. His three children, Daresna LaShay Reading, Christine Vaughn Reading, and JeNaun Patrice Reading, provide motivation for Commissioner Reading to work hard to make Dothan one of the finest places to live in the South!
