Production
The City of Dothan produces water solely from ground water sources. Water is pumped from various shallow and deep wells located throughout the Dothan area. Currently in use are 6 shallow wells and 28 deep wells with a maximum pumping capacity of 29 million gallons a day and an average output of 13 million gallons per day.
Deep ground water is normally very clean as the earth acts a a natural filter for contaminants. Water pumped from aquifers is sent directly to the distribution system with chlorine for disinfecting, fluoride for hygiene, and polyphosphate for water quality control. In June 1998, the City of Dothan was selected among the top six water producers in the nation for its water quality.
Dothan has 13 storage tanks that hold a total of 14.6 million gallons of water for fire and emergency use. The majority of these tanks are elevated to aid in distribution pressures and flows.
Distribution
Water pumped from the wells is sent directly to customers' businesses and residences through a network of water mains within the city and surrounding areas. These water mains range in size from 2" to 24" and are made of various materials such as PVC, ductile iron, and cast iron.
Water mains are constantly being extended as new growth areas are included in our city and new subdivisions develop within. Repair and replacement of older water mains are also required. New business and residence connections are a daily occurrence and place an increasing demand on our distribution system.
Fire hydrants are placed throughout the system for protection and service. Dothan's ISO rating has improved greatly due to vast main extensions.
Dothan's distribution system is similar to a large grid layout that is connected together at various points. These multiple connection points allow for better water flows and quality.
