Parent and Child Aquatics
The American Red Cross Infant and Preschool Aquatic Program is a water orientation program for children 6 months – 5 years old. This class develops swimming readiness by teaching children how to have fun in the water with bubble-blowing, kicking, back floating, underwater exploration, and more! These classes are offered throughout the year. One parent or guardian is required to be in the water with each child 6 months - 3 years old. The classes have 9 or 10 sessions, with 30 minutes per session. The cost of the class is $13.50 per child. Please call (334) 615-3762 for more information.
Swimming Lessons
The Department of Leisure Services offers American Red Cross Swimming Lessons for children 6 years old through adult. Levels 1 – 6 are available at our pools. Our instructors teach the skills needed to learn primary skills, and go all the way to advanced skills. The cost of a session is $10.00 per person. Please call (334) 615-3762 for more information.
Dothan Dolphins Swim Team
The Dothan Dolphin Swim Team, coached by Coach Jin Ri Jiang, or "Coach John", has been a fixture in the Department of Leisure Services for many years. The Dolphins swim in the Alan J. Bohlert Indoor Pool in Westgate Recreation Center. The team practices and competes all year, and has a variety of ages and abilities. Anyone age 6 – 18 can try out for the Dolphins by swimming 25 yards (one length) of the pool. After 2 weeks, the quarterly registration fee is $40.00, with $25.00 for each additional child. Lifeguard Training
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training is offered throughout the year at Westgate Recreation Center for ages 15 and up. This four-week class covers lifeguard rescues and guidelines, first aid, CPR, and emergency preparation. The class provides the training materials to help you acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform in any emergency situation. The class is $76.00, which includes the class text. Fee waivers are available for those individuals who are interested in working for the City of Dothan in the summer. Lifeguard Instructor
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Class is a four-week class that is held each spring at Westgate Recreation Center. This class will certify you to teach American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Classes. You must be at least 17 years old to enroll in this class. Please call (334) 615-3755 for more information.
Water Safety Instructor
The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Class is offered each spring at Westgate Recreation Center. This four week class is for individuals 17 years old and up who have some knowledge of the swimming strokes and can swim them well. This class certifies you to teach American Red Cross swimming lessons levels one through seven. Guard Start
Guard Start is a class for young people ages 11 to 14 that will teach them a foundation of aquatic leadership, knowledge, and skills. This class will introduce participants to the possibility of becoming a lifeguard in the future, and is an excellent transition class from Learn-to-Swim Level 6 to Lifeguard Training. Aquacise
Water Aerobics or "Aquacise" classes are available throughout the year at Westgate Recreation Center. The fee for a six-week period is $20.00.
